Meat, Fish Shops in Kashi to Be Shifted Outside City Limits
Officials said 350 to 400 shops will move to five outskirts sites to improve sanitation and urban management while keeping consumers served.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation approved relocating meat and fish shops to the city's outskirts during a meeting at the Town Hall in Maidagin led by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari.
Approximately 350 to 400 meat and fish shops will move to five designated locations including Ramnagar and Shivpur to enhance sanitation and optimize market operations, Public Relations Officer Sandeep Srivastava reported.
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal assured the assembly that implementation would commence shortly, though Corporator Gulshan Ali noted the proposal had been presented nearly a year ago without effective action.
Congress national secretary Shahnawaz Alam termed the move unconstitutional, claiming it deprives residents of livelihood and reflects a broader design to impose uniformity on society.
Addressing concerns, Corporator Gulshan Ali noted that annual closures during the holy month of Shravan already significantly impact traders, warning further restrictions could exacerbate economic hardship.
