Man Suffers Serious Burns to Leg After Vape Battery Explodes in Pocket
The burns left Gavin Sutherland needing multiple skin grafts and airlifted specialist care, while his son raised nearly £7,000 for the charity.
- In February, Gavin Sutherland, a 40-year-old jewellery workshop operator from Orkney, was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after a lithium battery exploded in his pocket, searing his thigh with severe burns.
- While working at his jewellery workshop, Gavin heard a hiss before the battery "went off like a firework," causing heat, smoke, and noise that forced quick-thinking colleagues to rush him to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall.
- Medical staff at Accident and Emergency treated a finger-length wound one and a half inches wide. "They had me on painkillers pretty quickly, but I could see the severity of the wound as they worked on it," Gavin said.
- Recovering at home, Gavin praised the Charity Air Ambulance crew, saying, "The crew were really reassuring- so professional yet so personal," and credited them with sparing him a difficult mainland journey.
- Following the incident, Gavin's nine-year-old son, Caleb, staged a 20-mile sponsored cycle to support the SCAA, raising nearly £7,000 for the charity serving remote communities like Orkney.
