Vancouver Whitecaps return to Swangard Stadium in search of another Canadian title
BC Place’s World Cup schedule sends Vancouver to its original home as the club seeks a fifth straight Voyageurs Cup.
On Wednesday, the Vancouver Whitecaps return to Swangard Stadium in Burnaby to host Cavalry in the Telus Canadian Championships quarterfinals, chasing their fifth consecutive Voyageurs Cup.
With the FIFA World Cup taking over BC Place, the Whitecaps will host the Calgary-based side at the stadium where they played from 1987 to 2010 as the Vancouver 86ers.
Forward Brian White will play his 200th career match for the Whitecaps, calling the return 'poetic,' while midfielder Jeevan Badwal, a 20-year-old Surrey native, said, 'It's a beautiful place, brings back memories.'
Cavalry enters second in the PCL with an 8-2-1 record; White warned, 'It's going to be a tough challenge,' noting the visitors have maintained summer gameplay while Vancouver enjoyed a break.
Amid national excitement over the Canadian team's World Cup success, midfielder Ryan Gauld believes the sport will continue growing, stating, 'You can see how much the national team has improved.
