Vancouver Whitecaps Acquire Playmaking Midfielder Kenji Cabrera From Peruvian Club
GREATER VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 22 – Kenji Cabrera signed through 2028 with an option for 2029 and recorded 16 goals and 17 assists in 122 games for FBC Melgar, Vancouver's new playmaking midfielder.
- The Vancouver Whitecaps announced on the morning of July 22, 2025, that they have signed 22-year-old playmaker Kenji Cabrera, who joins the team from FBC Melgar, a club competing in Peru’s top league.
- The transfer follows Pedro Vite's recent move to Pumas UNAM and reflects the Whitecaps' effort to strengthen their roster with a versatile player who can play centrally and as a winger.
- Cabrera, who was born in Japan to a Peruvian father, has made 122 appearances for Melgar, scoring 16 goals in total. This season, he has contributed nine goals along with four assists across 26 matches, and he has also earned 14 caps playing for Peru’s U-20 national team.
- Sporting director Axel Schuster noted that over the past year, Kenji has become an integral player for Melgar, and the club is confident he is prepared to advance to the next phase of his professional journey as they initiate the immigration formalities.
- Cabrera is expected to join the team by mid-August once the necessary paperwork, including his international clearance, travel authorization, employment eligibility, and health checks, are completed. The Whitecaps are eager to support him as he begins this new phase of his career and works toward fulfilling his potential.
