Vancouver Island Military Museum volunteers receive Governor General medal
The awards recognize decades of volunteer service preserving Canada’s military history, and the museum has recently added two paid employees.
On Thursday, Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Tamara Kronis recognized Vancouver Island Military Museum volunteers Bruce Davison, Jim Dickinson, and Angus Scully for their contributions, following their receipt of the Governor General of Canada's Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers last year.
For 40 years, the Vancouver Island Military Museum has operated primarily through volunteerism, maintaining dozens of displays of Canadian military artifacts spanning two centuries of national history.
Kronis presented certificates on behalf of the Parliament of Canada, recognizing 'long-standing volunteer service and dedication to preserving and sharing Canada's military history and heritage through the Vancouver Island Military Museum.'
The museum hired a permanent employee to manage community programming and guided tours, addressing the challenge: 'How do we keep little children occupied?' for schools and visiting groups.
Angus Scully, who retired from teaching history in Ontario, began volunteering 14 years ago after visiting the site, impressed by its quality and eager to bring his former students there.
