Vance says Microsoft is being suspended from program to apply for green cards for H-1B visa workers
- On Thursday, US Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling and Vice President JD Vance announced the indefinite suspension of Microsoft, Adobe, and six IT firms from the Permanent Labour Certification Programme, citing alleged fraud.
- Vance, chair of the US Anti-Fraud Task Force, alleged the companies replaced skilled American employees with lower-paid immigrants, claiming their hiring representations are "fundamentally illegitimate and therefore ultimately illegal."
- Since 2009, these companies received over 230,000 H-1B visa approvals and over 100,000 permanent labour certifications, figures Sonderling described as "hundreds of thousands of jobs that were taken from American workers."
- The Labor Department also expanded investigations into nine universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, over allegations international students on J-1 visas were used to undercut American wages.
- Despite the crackdown, President Donald Trump is scheduled to award Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella the National Medal of Technology and Innovation on Thursday, though officials provided no pathway for reinstated access.
