A 100% guarantee for gas reserves for the coming winter cannot be offered, says Stientje van Veldhoven, Minister of Climate and Green Growth. In the event of an extremely cold winter, such as occurs once every thirty years or so, Van Veldhoven does not dare to vouch for a full gas supply. ‘What we primarily see as a risk is that the gas price rises at the last minute, and you still have to purchase all sorts of things.’
Households should expect “very high gas prices” this winter now that the Netherlands is failing to meet its gas reserve replenishment target. “I am not so much afraid of physical shortages, but rather of very high prices and the energy poverty that could result,” says energy expert Hans van Cleef of the agency EqoLibrium.
