Surprise: Valve’s New Steam Machine Is Here, but the Price Is the Real Shocker
Valve will sell four configurations, including a 2TB model for $1,349, and says the price reflects component costs amid a memory and storage crunch.
- Valve confirmed on Monday that the Steam Machine will launch on June 29, starting at $1,049 for the 512GB model and $1,349 for the 2TB version. Preorders are open until 10 a.m. PT on June 25.
- Skyrocketing RAM prices, which have more than doubled in recent months, forced Valve to abandon its original pricing goals. The company stated that current prices reflect component costs secured over the past six months.
- To prevent scalping, Valve will use a randomization process to manage the reservation queue, mirroring the strategy used for the Steam Controller. Interested buyers must register by 10 a.m. PT on Thursday, June 25.
- Successful registrants will receive notification emails starting June 29, granting them 72 hours to complete their purchase. Those who register late will be added to a waitlist for future shipments.
- Positioned as a dedicated living room PC, the 6-inch console supports 4K gaming and pairs with the Steam Controller. It competes with high-end consoles like the PS5 Pro, utilizing semi-custom AMD hardware.
