Valve rejoins the VR hardware wars with standalone Steam Frame
Valve's new Steam Machine and modular Steam Frame headset focus on wireless streaming and customization with AMD tech, launching early 2026 for at-home gaming.
- On Wednesday, Valve unveiled a new suite of at-home hardware including the cube-shaped Steam Machine, Steam Frame headset, and new Steam Controller, all planned to ship in "early 2026".
- Valve prioritized a wireless-first streaming approach with a dedicated adapter, headset radio and Foveated Streaming while designing a 185 gram modular core for other headsets to attach components.
- The Steam Machine packs semi-custom AMD Zen 4 and RDNA3 hardware with 512 GB and 2 TB models; the Steam Frame weighs 440 grams, includes a 21.6 Wh battery, and features a Gen4 PCIe front expansion port.
- Valve said the Steam Frame will not support a wired PC connection, and standalone battery life will vary by game and settings; because the Steam Machine is a PC, users can install other apps or different operating systems.
- The move positions Valve in a more niche VR market, while third-party tinkerers could theoretically build modified Steam Frame variants using exposed Steam Frame expansion interfaces.
