Valve has confirmed Australian pricing and reservation details for its long-awaited Steam Frame, a wireless headset capable of running supported games locally or streaming PC titles. The 256GB Steam Frame costs A$1,609, while the 1TB version is priced at A$1,969. Both include the headset, controllers and a copy of Valve’s VR game Half-Life: Alyx. A power supply is not included. Valve is selling a 45W USB-C adapter separately for A$49, although buyers can use another compatible charger, including a Steam Deck power supply. Valve says global memory shortages and higher costs for motherboards, copper, shipping and other components pushed up the final price. Unlike traditional console manufacturers, Valve does not heavily subsidise its hardware to recover the loss through a closed software ecosystem. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, the SteamOS headset can play more than 100 Steam Frame Standalone Verified titles without a PC. More demanding VR and conventional flat-screen games can be streamed wirelessly from a gaming computer using the included dedicated adapter. Eye tracking supports foveated streaming, which concentrates image quality and bandwidth on the area where the player is looking while lowering detail in their peripheral vision. The headset features two 2160 x 2160 LCD displays, pancake lenses and refresh rates of up to 144Hz. It also offers inside-out tracking, Wi-Fi 7 and a microSD slot for expanding storage. Valve is using a randomised reservation system for the first allocation, aiming to prevent bots and resellers from securing available stock. Australian customers can register for either model until 3am on September 18. The list will then be randomised, with successful applicants receiving an email providing an opportunity to complete their purchase. Eligibility is restricted to Steam accounts in good standing that made a purchase before April 27, 2026, with one registration permitted per household. Valve is also selling a A$99 Ergonomic Accessories Kit containing controller hand straps, a headset top strap and an extended light blocker. An A$89 replacement kit includes a face gasket, head cushion and standard light blocker. Valve has not provided a firm Australian shipping date, although initial units are expected to follow shortly after the reservation process concludes. The Steam Frame follows the Steam Machine, Valve’s compact SteamOS gaming PC, which launched in Australia on June 29. Its 512GB model also starts at A$1,609, while the 2TB version costs A$2,109. Bundles with the Steam Controller are priced at A$1,728 and A$2,228 respectively.
