Valdez, Triolo and Rodriguez homer for Pirates in 11-7 win over Phillies
Rookie Esmerlyn Valdez homered for the fourth straight game, and Endy Rodriguez added a late three-run shot as Pittsburgh rallied from 5-0 down.
On Monday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 11-7, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit. Esmerlyn Valdez, Jared Triolo, and Endy Rodriguez each homered to secure the comeback victory.
Early home runs from Trea Turner, Brandon Marsh, and Bryce Harper gave Philadelphia a commanding 5-0 lead. However, starting pitcher Aaron Nola faltered in the fifth inning, allowing Pittsburgh to score six runs and seize control.
Rookie Esmerlyn Valdez homered for the fourth straight game, while Marsh delivered two home runs for the Phillies. Braxton Ashcraft settled down after a rough start to earn the win for Pittsburgh.
Endy Rodriguez added insurance with a three-run homer in the ninth inning, sealing the Pirates' comeback. Reliever Yohan Ramirez struck out Justin Crawford with runners in scoring position to secure the victory.
The teams meet again Tuesday night for the second game of their four-game series. RHP Bubba Chandler will start for Pittsburgh against Phillies ace LHP Cristopher Sanchez, who carries a 9-3 record.
