More sunshine in Europe initially sounds like a good news. But fewer clouds also mean that more skin-damaging UV radiation gets through. A new analysis shows how significantly the load has changed in parts of Europe.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Germany - the main cause is the UV radiation of the sun. And this has increased in Germany and Europe in recent years, as a new study shows. By Florian Zinner.
The sun-burning UV radiation continues to increase significantly year after year, as a recent study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna shows. The main cause of this trend is the decreasing cloud cover. Dr. Klaus Eisendle, primary of the Dermatology Department at the Bolzano Hospital, advises on increased caution, as skin cancer continues to increase significantly.
In large parts of Europe, sun-burning UV radiation has increased significantly within a decade. An international research team led by Alois Schmalwieser from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and Sebastian Lorenz from the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection evaluated data from forty measuring stations between 2013 and 2022.
