USS Helena submarine decommissioned after 38 years with US Navy, city to get relics

KITSAP COUNTY, WASHINGTON, JUL 28 – The USS Helena served as a key element of US naval power for nearly four decades and earned five Meritorious Unit Commendations during its service, officials said.

  • At the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington, the USS Helena was decommissioned July 25, 2025, after 38 years of service.
  • Long before today’s ceremony, Helena began service after being commissioned July 11, 1987, in Groton, Connecticut, nearly forty years conducting silent missions.
  • With the color guard presenting the flag, twenty-five plank owners attended the decommissioning ceremony, and Cmdr. Kyle Jones recounted Helena’s heritage.
  • After decommissioning, Helena city will inherit two large relics: the sail and the propeller, with dismantling taking about a year and transport costs falling to the city, possibly up to five years.
  • Amid community interest, the Helena city plans to display USS Helena relics at Anchor Park near the Lewis & Clark Library, pending a community discussion.
