A US warship is making a friendship visit to a Cambodian naval base upgraded with China’s help
USS Cincinnati’s visit marks the third foreign naval call since Ream Naval Base’s 2025 upgrade, with 37 U.S. warships visiting Cambodian facilities since 2003, officials said.
- The USS Cincinnati docked at Cambodia's Ream Naval Base for a five-day visit, marking the first U.S. Navy warship there since its Chinese-funded renovation and the third foreign vessel since Ream's 2025 reopening.
- China-Funded upgrades to Ream's new pier and dry dock prompted Washington to raise alarms over possible exclusive access, but Prime Minister Hun Manet says the base remains open to friendly navies.
- The Cincinnati, an Independence-class ship, will host about 100 crew members for ship tours, sporting events in Sihanoukville, and meetings with U.S. and Cambodian naval officers during the Jan. 24-28 visit.
- The U.S. Navy described the port call as reaffirming a `shared commitment to regional security, peace and prosperity`, while Cambodian Navy highlighted cooperation opportunities in human resource training.
- The port call highlights growing engagement between Washington and Phnom Penh, following the Department of Defence National Defence Strategy released Jan 23 and plans to revive flagship exercises, even as China still uses some Ream facilities.
