Cleveland Fed: Tariffs Are Raising some Prices in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky
- The Trump administration expanded 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum derivative products to include imported home appliances, effective June 23.
- This extension follows earlier tariff increases from 25% to 50% starting in March and aims to address trade practices that the government sees as undermining national security.
- The tariffs target steel and aluminum content in eight major appliance categories and have raised costs for manufacturers and consumers across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
- A Cleveland Fed report from last week indicated that tariffs and related uncertainty force businesses to raise prices, while a Quinippiac poll shows Trump's economic approval at 38%, with a 16-point disapproval margin.
- These tariffs are driving price increases and economic pressures in manufacturing regions, suggesting ongoing impacts on jobs, consumer demand, and business costs in the Fourth Federal Reserve District.
