According to the new US administration, the United States would have paid for the defence of Europe while Europe was building the welfare state. This version of Europe as a “slurry”, in the words of Vice President J.D. Vance, responds to a distortion of the past, because the strategy of the United States during the cold war was not to defend Europe from the Soviet Union, but to defend its interests in European theatre.
