US officials said the Iranian warship was sunk in international waters, marking the first US torpedo sinking of an enemy ship since World War II.
- US defence secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that an American submarine sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean by torpedo.
- Since the end of the Second World War, the Press Association found three cases where ships were sunk by torpedoes: INS Khukri in 1971, ARA General Belgrano in 1982, and ROKS Cheonan in 2010.
- Investigators found a group of experts concluded ROKS Cheonan sank after a homing torpedo detonation made in North Korea, though North Korea denied responsibility and the case remains disputed.
