US Job Market Stalled in July as Employers Cut 23,000 Jobs, Delivering Political Blow to Trump
A weaker-than-expected July jobs report and 103,000 in downward revisions lifted bets that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged.
- On Friday, the Labor Department reported the U.S. economy unexpectedly shed 23,000 nonfarm payrolls in July, far below the 83,000 gain economists had forecast, delivering a political blow to President Donald Trump three months before midterm elections.
- Revisions slashed 103,000 jobs from May and June payrolls, compounding the weakness, while the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% because labor force participation slid to 61.4%, the lowest in over five years.
- Stocks climbed more than 3.5% during the week while Gold surged more than 7%, as Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor, noted "there are just fewer people available to hire."
- Expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hold in September increased following the report, though three officials dissented at last week's meeting in favor of a hike, reflecting ongoing policy divisions.
- Palantir Technologies Inc. delivered what CEO Alex Karp called an "otherworldly" quarter Monday, with revenue jumping 93% year-over-year to $1.94 billion and full-year guidance raised to $8.15 billion.

Private Employers Add Just 44,000 Jobs in July, Missing Expectations
U.S. private employers added just 44,000 jobs in July, according to the ADP National Employment Report released Aug. 5 — well short of the roughly 75,000 jobs economists had forecast, and the weakest monthly ADP reading since January. It’s a sharp slowdown from June’s revised total of 95,000. The gains were uneven. Service-providing industries added […]
Job Growth Stinks, Thanks to Trumpflation and Attack on Immigrants
Trump’s demolition of the American job market continues. Last week’s jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a stunning loss of 23,000 jobs in July: If there’s one thing an economy’s supposed to do, it’s add jobs. At least enough to absorb folks joining and re-joining the workforce — from school, raising kids, and (at least in former times) immigration. So a -23,000 month, like the U.S. economy had in July, is definitely going in …
July Job Report: Weak Job Growth and Slowing Wages
Photo by Hennie Stander The economy lost jobs for the first time since a weather-related drop in February. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.1 percent, but the decline was the result of people dropping out of the labor market in July. Employment as measured in the household survey fell by 87,000. Wage growth also slowed further to a year-over-year increase of 3.2 percent. That is down from a pace of more than 4.0 percent through 2023 and 202…
