- Administration actions included attempts to cut nearly $2.4 billion from Child Care and Development Fund to five states, freezing Minnesota payments amid fraud allegations, and rescinding Biden-era provider-payment rules earlier in January.
- Evidence cited includes Head Start's role and that families across the country are being forced to choose work or essentials, the senators wrote, highlighting its importance in rural communities.
- Court action followed with judges temporarily blocking freezes earlier this month and extending that order Friday, while ACF said Monday it is reviewing the senators' letter and USDA did not reply.
- Capacity worries stem from departures and prior funding lapses as USDA saw more than 20,000 employees leave and Head Start centers faced grant gaps during the 2025 government shutdown.
