US scholar of Myanmar detained in China was on academic visit, think tank says
China says Min Zin is suspected of espionage and endangering national security after his detention during an academic workshop visit.
Chinese authorities detained Min Zin, executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar, in Kunming on June 3, accusing the American scholar of espionage and endangering national security.
Zin, a former student activist who participated in Myanmar's 1988 democracy movement, traveled to Kunming to attend an academic workshop and helped establish the ISP-Myanmar following the 2021 coup.
ISP-Myanmar strongly rejects and condemns "any groundless allegations," while China's foreign ministry reiterated that Zin is suspected of espionage, stating "China will handle this case in accordance with the law."
The State Department rejected the accusations against Zin, confirming that consular officers have visited the scholar while remaining engaged with Chinese officials to provide assistance.
Detained weeks before a five-day state visit to China by Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing, the arrest timing suggests links to broader diplomatic maneuvering between China and Myanmar's military.
