Rubio Says U.S. Goal in Iran Is Restoring Strait of Hormuz Access
Marco Rubio said the U.S. priority is reopening the Strait of Hormuz after a blockade sent oil prices soaring and disrupted global shipping.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced "Project Freedom," a new operation replacing "Epic Fury" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and rescue 23,000 trapped civilians from 87 countries.
The Strait of Hormuz was open prior to United States and Israel military strikes against Iran; Tehran closed the shipping lane in retaliation, prompting a United States blockade of Iranian ports.
Project Freedom involves around 15,000 military personnel, 100 aircraft, and Navy Destroyers to escort commercial vessels. Rubio stated the mission aims to rescue 23,000 people from 87 countries in the Gulf.
Less than 48 hours after launch, President Trump paused the operation to allow settlement talks with Iran while maintaining a United States blockade of Iranian ports.
Critics including CNN's Jim Sciutto argue the administration is ending the war without achieving regime change or eliminating Iran's missile program; Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth dismissed European security efforts as "silly.
