US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt propose roadmap for Sudan peace
- On Friday, the United States, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, put forward a peace plan for Sudan that calls for an initial humanitarian ceasefire followed by a lasting truce.
- The roadmap addresses the ongoing violence since 2023 between Sudan’s military forces and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group, which has resulted in roughly 40,000 deaths and displaced over 12 million individuals.
- The proposal calls for a three-month humanitarian pause to facilitate aid access, followed by a lasting ceasefire and a nine-month period to transition to civilian-led governance, while denouncing the involvement of extremist groups.
- US sanctions targeted Sudan's finance minister Jibril Ibrahim and the Baraa Ibn-Malik Brigade to limit Islamist influence and curb Iran's regional activities, amid accusations and denials over UAE support for RSF.
- The allied nations declared no military solution exists, urged humanitarian access, and emphasized that Sudan's future governance must be inclusive, transparent, and free from warring party control.
