U.S. Sanctions New CJNG Leader, More than 50 People and Companies
Treasury said the action targets the cartel’s leadership, financiers and criminal networks that laundered tens of millions of dollars annually since at least 2023.
- On Thursday, the Treasury Department's Foreign Assets Control announced sanctions targeting Jalisco New Generation Cartel leadership, including Juan Carlos Gonzalez, the stepson of late founder Mencho.
- Gonzalez assumed control of the CJNG after founder Mencho died in a Mexican operation earlier this year. The State Department designated the cartel a foreign terrorist organization in February 2025.
- Networks associated with Audias Flores Silva, known as "Jardinero," and Cesar Alejandro Villasenor Olivares, known as "El Guero Conta," were also targeted despite their April arrests. Treasury said their family networks and front companies continue operating.
- "Today's action strikes Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion's leadership, financiers, and criminal networks," said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. The move denies the cartel resources used to traffic fentanyl and threaten American lives.
- Since 2015, OFAC has sanctioned more than 250 people and entities linked to the cartel. The network allegedly laundered tens of millions of dollars annually since at least 2023, funding continued operations.
