US sanctions Mahan Air’s China network over alleged support for Iran’s IRGC
Treasury says the network helped Mahan Air move electronics, travel and weapons support while all U.S.-linked property of the designated parties is blocked.
- On Thursday, the United States designated six entities and individuals across China, India, Russia, and Iran for supporting Mahan Air, which Washington described as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' "airline of choice" for military transport.
- The Treasury Department stated that Mahan Air, though appearing civilian, has long facilitated IRGC-Qods Force personnel travel and weapons procurement, aligning with President Donald Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum 2.
- Among those designated are China-based Shanghai Wings International Logistics and managing director Tang Xin, who owns 50 per cent of Shanghai Elite International Travel; the Treasury also sanctioned DadeNegar Startup Studio for soliciting American and Israeli equipment locations.
- Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated, "Those who provide financial services, logistics, or commercial support to the IRGC or Mahan Air are helping sustain a terrorist enterprise," as sanctions freeze assets and bar Americans from business.
- These designations aim to undermine networks supporting Iranian destabilization, particularly following recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, while foreign financial institutions that facilitate transactions could face secondary sanctions.
