US reups do-not-travel warning for Russia over ‘suspected pneumonic plague’

WHO said the risk is low outside Russia as investigators trace nearly 200 contacts and monitor the case closely.

  • On Tuesday, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced it is "aware of and closely monitoring" a suspected pneumonic plague death in Russia involving laboratory researcher Darya Shipilova.
  • Shipilova, a 28-year-old researcher in Siberia, died from the suspected infection; Russian authorities quarantined a hospital in the Irkutsk region and are tracing her contacts.
  • According to the World Health Organization, pneumonic plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia is "highly infectious and can be transmitted through respiratory particles," with authorities placing nearly 200 people under medical observation.
  • Paul Friedrichs, former director of the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy, said officials should disclose what the researcher was working on, while Ashish Jha added we "have to assume we may not know the full truth."
  • Rubio told reporters in Iceland that the Trump administration is "closely" watching the situation, noting the United States has measures available to assist but requires transparency before offering further support.
