US raises pressure on EU to 'deliver' on non-tariff trade commitments

Washington says the rules would burden U.S. firms and widen trade frictions as Brussels resists further concessions.

  • On Friday, U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder urged the European Union to ease the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, arguing these rules burden American firms and violate prior trade commitments.
  • Puzder cited the July 2025 Framework Agreement, which committed the EU to ensure rules would not pose 'undue restrictions on transatlantic trade'; the EU scaled back sustainability rules in December 2025 but the U.S. maintains requirements still exceed acceptable limits.
  • Washington also criticized the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which Puzder charged was 'a tariff in substance, no matter the 'climate policy' label,' as the U.S. document claims 'onerous' obligations adversely impact American business competitiveness.
  • Responding to the pressure, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta confirmed the bloc is 'engaging' with Washington but stated: 'neither our rules framework nor our regulatory autonomy are up for negotiation.'
  • Meanwhile, a White House report on Thursday flagged the EU as a risk regarding 'illegal transshipment' from China, though Brussels responded that it 'shares the US objective of tackling customs fraud' and risks remain 'embedded within broad legitimate trade flows.
