US opens its home World Cup with a dynamic 4-1 victory over Paraguay, sparked by Balogun’s 2 goals
Folarin Balogun sparked the Americans to a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their first home World Cup in 32 years, playing before 70,492 fans in Los Angeles.
New coach Mauricio Pochettino implemented a creative system, transforming an American squad that scored only three goals combined at the Qatar World Cup four years ago.
After an early own goal by Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla opened the scoring, Balogun scored in the 31st minute and again at halftime, helping the Americans establish a 3-0 lead.
Paraguay's Mauricio pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute, but Giovanni Reyna sealed the result with a stoppage-time goal, giving the Americans four goals in a World Cup match for the first time.
The Americans face Australia on June 19 in Seattle, while Paraguay travels to San Francisco to play Turkey in their next Group D matches.
