US moves to end monitoring of Teamsters union

The union said reforms, including a review board and more than 400 bans, show it can police corruption without federal oversight.

  • On Wednesday, the Department of Justice and the Teamsters jointly filed a motion to end the 37-year federal monitorship of the union, seeking court approval to terminate oversight.
  • A 1989 Consent Decree, stemming from a 1988 civil racketeering lawsuit, established federal oversight to eliminate organized crime influence and ensure fair, democratic, member-driven elections within the Teamsters.
  • Earlier this year, Independent Review Officer Honorable Barbara Jones concluded the International Union has developed institutional tools to adequately detect and resolve major corruption, providing evidentiary basis for the motion.
  • Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien stated the filing marks a "new era," noting that internal controls and vigilance prove the organization can "police our own" more stringently than any labor organization.
  • The motion requires approval by the Federal District Court and the Honorable Loretta Preska, who has overseen the consent-decree monitorships since 2002, to finalize the union's transition to full self-governance.
