US manufacturing activity jumps to more than four-year high in July

Creighton’s July survey found Iowa business conditions still growing, even as inflation and the war in Iran weighed on factory outlooks.

  • The Institute reported Manufacturing PMI registered 55.6% in July, the highest reading since May 2022, as production and employment expanded across 15 of 18 industries.
  • Creighton University Economics Professor Ernie Goss found economic conditions improved in only three of nine states surveyed, while Iowa manufacturing shed 4,600 jobs in the past 12 months.
  • The ISM Employment Index reached 52.8%, expanding for the first time in 33 months after factory hiring had contracted since before the last Federal Reserve tightening cycle ended.
  • Copper prices reached $6.52 per pound on Monday, testing all-time highs, while The International Energy Agency warned primary supply runs 25% short of requirements by 2035.
  • Consensus estimates project combined capital spending at Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, and SpaceX will reach $1.1 trillion next fiscal year, fueling manufacturing expansion as hyperscalers prioritize infrastructure.
