US lifts sanctions on daughter of Myanmar military-linked businessman
Theint Win Htet’s lawyer dismissed the case after the Treasury removed her from the blacklist, which freezes U.S. assets and bars American dealings.
On Friday, the United States Treasury Department removed Theint Win Htet from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, lifting sanctions on the daughter of a Myanmar businessman accused of supporting the military regime.
In January 2024, the Treasury targeted the Shwe Byain Phyu Group and founder Thein Win Zaw, citing the family's ownership of at least 20 companies accused of distributing petroleum for the military regime.
Washington-Based lawyer Erich Ferrari filed a notice Friday voluntarily dismissing her lawsuit after her delisting. Her July complaint stated, "Plaintiff's US credit cards have been blocked, her foreign bank accounts have been restricted, closed, or refused, and she has been unable to complete her university studies."
Campaign group Justice For Myanmar denounced the move, stating, "It is deplorable that the US government continues to delist Myanmar cronies and their family members that provide funding for the junta's terror." Htet's mother remains under US sanctions.
Reuters reported this week that the Trump administration opened talks with Myanmar's military-installed government, reversing prior isolation policies; it remains unclear if this diplomatic pivot influenced the decision to delist Htet.
