US Justice Department adds former Trump lawyer to probe of former CIA director, CNN reports
The former Trump lawyer will help advance a probe that has stalled for months, as the FBI plans interviews with about six witnesses.
- On Saturday, the Justice Department added attorney Joseph diGenova to the investigation into former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan; diGenova, who previously served on President Donald Trump's legal team, will work from the Southern District of Florida.
- The investigation focuses on Trump's long-standing grievance regarding the 2017 intelligence assessment that found Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Brennan has condemned the probe as politically biased and a misuse of the legal system.
- Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche removed the career Miami federal prosecutor from the case on Friday after she resisted pressure to quickly bring charges against Brennan. Blanche faces pressure to deliver on the president's priorities after predecessor Pam Bondi was ousted.
- DiGenova previously drew controversy when he suggested a former cybersecurity official should be "Taken out at dawn and shot." The FBI plans to interview roughly a half-dozen people over the coming weeks as part of the ongoing probe.
