US forces turn 23 vessels back to Iran, enforcing blockade, military says
Shipping sources said at least two vessels were hit by gunfire as Iran restored strict military control over the waterway.
- On Saturday, Iran re-imposed strict military control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning mariners the waterway was closed, as U.S. Central Command forces continued enforcing a maritime blockade of Iranian ports.
- Tehran justified the closure as a response to the U.S. blockade, which Iranian officials termed "piracy" and "banditry"; the waterway will remain tightly controlled until the U.S. agrees to "complete freedom of navigation."
- At least 20 vessels were turned back and Iranian naval forces reportedly hit at least three tankers, prompting India to summon its ambassador after two Indian-flagged tankers were fired upon near the strait.
- Hundreds of vessels and about 20,000 seafarers remain stranded in the Gulf, awaiting passage through the bottleneck, where restricted access threatens global oil flows and increases logistics costs.
- President Donald Trump rejected Tehran's actions on Saturday, stating, "They can't blackmail us," while high-level diplomatic efforts remain stalled with no date set for future negotiations following the collapse of talks in Pakistan last weekend.
