US federal workforce drops to lowest level in at least a decade
OPM's new platform reveals a governmentwide federal workforce decline with nearly 220,000 fewer employees since January 2025 and a 75% drop in telework hours, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Office of Personnel Management launched a modernized FedScope public website to deliver federal workforce data faster with new filters, visuals, and monthly updates based on user feedback.
- The launch follows long-running modernization efforts and a Government Accountability Office recommendation, with OPM updating FedScope after reshaping the workforce last year under President Donald Trump.
- OPM's data shows the government shed well over 300,000 federal employees last year, with a net loss of nearly 220,000 and several agencies losing over a quarter of staff.
- Budget analysts found little cost savings as federal salaries totaled close to $244 billion, 3% more than under President Joe Biden, Reuters analysis of Treasury Department daily spending figures showed.
- The new site also shows federal workforce unions fell from about 56% to 38% last year, telework hours dropped 75%, and race data is missing due to DEIA cuts.
