US drought eases slightly, but May ranks as the second
Rainfall in the Southern Plains and Midwest helped reduce drought coverage after eight weeks when more than 60% of the U.S. was affected.
The U.S. Drought Monitor reported on June 18 that national drought conditions declined to 55%, though this May ranked as the second-driest on record according to the Palmer Drought Severity Index.
Recent rainfall in the Southern Plains and Midwest contributed to the slight improvement in drought conditions over the last few weeks.
Baltimore City DPW Director Matthew Auerbach notes recent rain only raised reservoir levels a foot and a half, while the Maryland Department of the Environment lists Central Maryland groundwater at emergency low levels.
Residents relying on Baltimore City water system face voluntary water restrictions, with official Garber urging people to minimize shower time and refrain from filling swimming pools.
Conservation remains critical for residents relying on well water, as depleting a well is costly to fix; no statewide restrictions are currently in place, placing responsibility on individual users.
