Adani prosecutors must justify dropping criminal case, US judge rules
The judge said prosecutors gave too little support for abandoning a 2024 bribery indictment tied to $250 million in alleged India solar contract payments.
On Friday, US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered the DOJ to justify its decision to drop criminal charges against Gautam Adani, setting a July 13 deadline for prosecutors to provide factual support for the dismissal.
Federal prosecutors moved to dismiss the 2024 indictment last month after Adani pledged a $10bn investment in the United States, abandoning earlier allegations of a $250 million bribery scheme in India.
Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, agreed to pay $18 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission, while Adani Enterprises Ltd. paid $275 million to resolve a Treasury Department probe into Iran sanctions violations.
Represented by Robert Giuffra, a lawyer for President Donald Trump, Adani met with Donald Trump Jr. last November, and his attorney James McDonald was tapped by Trump to serve as Manhattan's top federal prosecutor.
Adani stated the matter is "now behind us" and the conglomerate plans to focus on its next phase of growth, while consistently denying any wrongdoing regarding the federal charges.
