US Democratic lawmakers visit Cuba, call on Trump to ‘bring the rhetoric down’
The lawmakers said sanctions are worsening blackouts and fuel shortages, and they urged talks after meeting Cuban leaders and visiting hospitals.
- On Sunday, U.S. Representatives Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Jonathan Jackson of Illinois concluded a five-day visit to Cuba, denouncing the U.S. fuel embargo as "an illegal blockade of energy supplies" and "economic bombing."
- President Donald Trump imposed a de facto oil blockade this year to pressure Cuba's government, while also restricting remittances and threatening tariffs on any country providing fuel to the island.
- Jackson warned that without aid, "there's going to be a huge migration coming towards the United States," describing the island as "the most sanctioned part of Planet Earth right now, just 90 miles off our shores."
- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel met the delegation, reiterating a willingness to "engage in serious and responsible bilateral dialogue," while Cuba announced it would pardon more than 2,000 prisoners.
- Last week, a Russian tanker delivered 730,000 barrels of crude oil to the island as an exception to Trump's policy, providing temporary supply as Cuba produces only 40% of the oil it needs.
