Courts order ICE not to deport man who spent 43 years in prison before murder case overturned
- Two US courts ordered immigration officials to halt the deportation of Subramanyam Vedam, 64-year-old Indian-origin man, after an immigration judge stayed his deportation on Thursday .
 - ICE says it is seeking to deport Vedam over an old drug plea, citing a no-contest plea to LSD delivery filed when he was about 20, despite his 1980 murder conviction being overturned earlier this year.
 - After his October 3 release, ICE transferred Vedam to an Alexandria, Louisiana short-term holding centre last week that has its own deportation airstrip.
 - A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the overturned verdict doesn't negate the drug conviction, and Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, cautioned enforcement will continue; Saraswathi Vedam, sister, welcomed the relief and urged the Board of Immigration Appeals to prevent deportation.
 - The BIA's decision, which could take several months, will determine next steps as Vedam's lawyers argue his wrongful imprisonment and accepted citizenship application prior to 1982 arrest should weigh against deportation.
