The U.S. State Department strongly condemned the Hong Kong authorities' filing of new national security charges against prominent democracy activist Joshua Wong, calling the move a "tragic attack on Hong Kong's future" intended to further suppress dissenting voices and showing that Beijing has no intention of fulfilling its commitments to Hong Kong.

Joshua Wong, a well-known Hong Kong democracy activist, is facing a new round of charges under China's "National Security Law" and has not yet applied for bail.
