The U.S. State Department strongly condemned the Hong Kong authorities' filing of new national security charges against prominent democracy activist Joshua Wong, calling the move a "tragic attack on Hong Kong's future" intended to further suppress dissenting voices and showing that Beijing has no intention of fulfilling its commitments to Hong Kong.
Joshua Wong, former secretary-general of Demosisto, was arrested again by police on June 6 and may face life imprisonment. The US State Department strongly condemned the Hong Kong authorities' move as a "tragic attack on Hong Kong's future" and called for the withdrawal of the new charges against Wong.
