US charges Iraqi national accused of plotting at least 18 terror attacks in Europe

Prosecutors say Mohammad Al-Saadi pledged thousands of dollars to an undercover officer he thought would attack a synagogue.

  • An Iraqi national was charged Friday in Manhattan federal court with conspiring to support Iran-backed terrorist organizations, facing charges of conspiracy to provide material support to Kataib Hizballah and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
  • Since the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran began, Al-Saadi directed others to attack American and Israeli interests in retaliation, the criminal complaint alleges. He and associates coordinated at least 18 terrorist attacks in Europe and two in Canada under Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya.
  • The complaint details attacks including a firebombing of a Bank of New York Mellon building in Amsterdam, an explosives plot at the Bank of America building in Paris, stabbing two people in London, and seeking to attack a New York City synagogue last month.
  • Arrested in Turkey and brought to a Brooklyn federal jail on Thursday night, Al-Saadi has been held in solitary confinement, his lawyer Andrew Dalack said. At his initial appearance, he claimed through his lawyer to be a political prisoner persecuted for ties to the late Qasem Soleimani.
  • Prosecutors allege Al-Saadi's involvement in two recent attacks in Canada: a synagogue attack and shooting at the U.S. consulate in Toronto in March. He will remain jailed but could petition for bail as proceedings continue.
