CDC Ends Emergency Response to H5N1 Bird Flu
UNITED STATES, JUL 7 – Since 2022, H5N1 bird flu has affected nearly 175 million birds in the US, with no human cases reported since February 2025, reducing the public health risk, officials said.
- On July 2, 2025, the U.S. CDC deactivated its emergency operations for the H5N1 bird flu following a notable decrease in cases.
- The emergency response, declared on April 4, 2024, was triggered by widespread infections among birds and 70 confirmed human cases including one death.
- Since February 2025, no human cases have been reported, and the CDC transitioned bird flu monitoring into its regular influenza surveillance programs.
- Dr. Nirav Shah, former CDC principal deputy director, stated he would also have ended the emergency response, noting it was initiated by career CDC scientists and the current risk is low.
- Experts warn that reducing focus could hinder detection of new outbreaks since the virus still circulates in migratory birds, so continued monitoring remains necessary.
