It’s Official: The Duty-Free Exemption on Small Shipments from China Expires May 2

The rule, known as the de minimis exemption, exempts packages worth less than $800. It’s used by fast fashion giants Shein and Temu—and a lot of small American companies that drop-ship from overseas warehouses.

Donald Trump signed on Wednesday a decree cancelling the exemption from customs duties for small parcels sent from China.

De minimis shipping from China ending in May, other countries at risk

The White House plans to nix the exemption for other countries once systems are in place to collect duty revenue, with few exceptions.

So far, shipments with a value of less than $800 could be imported duty-free in the USA, which is to be changed from May onwards.
