The U.S. began moving 150 Islamic State detainees from northeast Syria to Iraq, aiming to relocate up to 7,000 to prevent breakouts and enhance regional security.
- On Wednesday, the United States military launched an operation to transfer 150 Islamic State group detainees from Hasakeh province to Iraq, with CENTCOM saying up to 7,000 could be moved.
- Washington said its alliance with the SDF has largely ended as the US backs Damascus to take security responsibility, and a ceasefire on Tuesday saw the SDF withdraw while Syrian government forces entered camps and prisons.
- Al-Hol camp holds around 24,000 people, including 14,500 Syrians, nearly 3,000 Iraqis, and about 6,200 women and children from around 40 nationalities, while a highly secured section holds 6,500 detainees.
- CENTCOM said the transfers are critical to preventing breakouts, as Iraq approved reception and received the first batch of 144 individuals for interrogation and trial in Iraqi prisons.
- Both sides blamed each other for incidents including a Shadadi prison escape on Monday and a drone strike that killed seven soldiers, as Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces traded accusations despite the truce.
