US begins transferring ISIL-linked detainees from Syria to Iraq

The U.S. began moving 150 Islamic State detainees from northeast Syria to Iraq, aiming to relocate up to 7,000 to prevent breakouts and enhance regional security.

  • On Wednesday, the United States military launched an operation to transfer 150 Islamic State group detainees from Hasakeh province to Iraq, with CENTCOM saying up to 7,000 could be moved.
  • Washington said its alliance with the SDF has largely ended as the US backs Damascus to take security responsibility, and a ceasefire on Tuesday saw the SDF withdraw while Syrian government forces entered camps and prisons.
  • Al-Hol camp holds around 24,000 people, including 14,500 Syrians, nearly 3,000 Iraqis, and about 6,200 women and children from around 40 nationalities, while a highly secured section holds 6,500 detainees.
  • CENTCOM said the transfers are critical to preventing breakouts, as Iraq approved reception and received the first batch of 144 individuals for interrogation and trial in Iraqi prisons.
  • Both sides blamed each other for incidents including a Shadadi prison escape on Monday and a drone strike that killed seven soldiers, as Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces traded accusations despite the truce.
