US bans vaccine ingredient targeted by anti-vaxxers
UNITED STATES, JUL 24 – The new policy eliminates thimerosal from 4% to 5% of flu vaccines, fulfilling a decades-old pledge despite no evidence of harm, says Health Secretary Kennedy.
- On July 23, 2025, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that ACIP voted to remove thimerosal from all influenza vaccines, fulfilling a decades-long goal, with Kennedy signing the policy into effect.
- About 5% of U.S. flu vaccines administered in late 2024 and early 2025 contained thimerosal, followed by recent ACIP advice to remove it, as Kennedy signed into policy.
- In a close vote, the ACIP panel recommended single-dose, thimerosal-free flu vaccines after Lyn Redwood’s presentation.
- Kennedy said, `Injecting any amount of mercury into children when safe, mercury-free alternatives exist defies common sense`, while the HHS statement added, `a commitment to restore trust with Americans by removing risk while sustaining access to vaccines`.
