US Banking Groups Plan Nationwide Blockchain Network for 2027
- On Tuesday, 39 state banking associations announced the 'BankChain Alliance,' aiming to build a nationwide, industry-owned blockchain network by 2027 for tokenized deposits, smart payments, and automated settlements.
- Kathy Kraninger, interim chair of the project and former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, described it as 'an unprecedented collaboration representing thousands of banks' designed for institutions of all sizes.
- Described by the associations as 'industry-owned, industry-designed and industry-governed,' the project is currently seeking a technology partner to ensure the blockchain remains 'interoperable with other networks.'
- BankChain joins several bank-led networks announced since late 2025, including Swift, which recently tested tokenized digital assets with 17 banks, and the 50-bank IBAT group preparing a tokenized-deposit pilot.
- Stablecoin developers are also pursuing consortium models, with Open Standard naming more than 140 companies for its Open USD stablecoin expected to launch later in 2026.
