U.S. Army Picks Hanwha Defence Unit for Mobile Artillery Prototypes
The contract includes six prototype systems and an option for 12 more as soldiers test the K9 platform for the Army’s modernization program.
- On Tuesday, the U.S. Army selected Hanwha Defense USA to supply prototype K9 Mobile Howitzers for its new Mobile Tactical Cannon program, marking a breakthrough for the South Korean firm in the U.S. weapons market.
- Valued at up to $262.9 million, the agreement provides accelerated delivery of six prototype MTC systems with an option for 12 more. Soldiers will use these platforms in operational experiments to assess performance, reliability, and supportability in combat conditions.
- Competing against Elbit America, Leonardo DRS, Rheinmetall, and British BAE Systems, the Army chose the K9MH platform. Modernization effort seeks to replace aging M777 towed artillery and Paladin M109A7 self-propelled systems.
- Hanwha Defense USA is establishing a phase I integration and test facility in Opelika, Alabama, supported by a three-year lease. This commitment strengthens the American defense industrial base and localizes production.
- With more than 2,500 K9 Howitzers fielded globally, the U.S. joins nearly a dozen allies sharing a supply chain. Michael Coulter, Hanwha Defense USA CEO, stated the company is excited to bring its proven commitment to local execution to the United States.
