US Army to Get 9 New Wheeled Howitzers Prototypes From Hanwha
The wheeled 155mm system fires farther than the M777 and uses a three-person crew, with six prototypes under an Army contract worth up to $262.9 million.
- On Monday, the United States Army designated its new mobile howitzer the XM1776 and took delivery of the first prototype at the Association of the United States Army conference in Washington.
- The Army contracted Hanwha Defense USA in August to develop the Mobile Tactical Cannon, a wheeled system designed to replace aging towed M777 howitzers and increase mobility on the battlefield.
- Based on Hanwha's K9 Mobile Howitzer, the system features a 52-caliber barrel and a crew of three who can "shoot and scoot" from inside the armored cab, firing up to nine rounds per minute—more than double the M777's four.
- The four-year contract, worth up to nearly $263 million, covers procurement of 18 systems for "rapid prototyping, testing, and Soldier experimentation," with the Army planning to integrate the cannons into Stryker Brigade Combat Teams.
- Beyond the current wheeled prototypes, the Army published a solicitation in August for a tracked variant of the Mobile Tactical Cannon, which Hanwha officials indicated they are seeking to fill as part of wider modernization efforts.
