US, Iran Dig in as Threats Ramp Up
The conflict has caused over 1,600 deaths and disrupted global oil supply, with Brent crude prices rising nearly 24% since Feb. 28, as both sides intensify military strikes and threats.
- On Tuesday, Iran's strikes on regional oil infrastructure and pledges to choke off maritime routes rattled markets as the United States promised blistering new strikes.
- The cycle began when U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28 prompted Iran to attack energy and maritime targets to pressure the U.S. and Israel to end strikes, Tehran's leadership said.
- Gen. Dan Caine said U.S. forces hit more than 5,000 targets, U.S. Central Command released video March 9 of three strikes on Iranian missile launchers, and Bahrain reported intercepting over 100 missiles and 175 drones.
- Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has stopped tankers carrying 20% of global oil, while Amin Nasser said Aramco rerouted tankers and its East-West pipeline will reach 7 million barrels a day, with Brent crude spiking nearly $120 on Monday.
- The U.N. said more than 667,000 people in Lebanon registered as displaced yesterday, with over 85,000 entering Syria and more than 45,000 U.K. citizens evacuated, while maritime attacks killed at least seven sailors.
