U.S. and ASEAN chair call for unconditional release of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi
- The United States and ASEAN issued separate statements demanding the unconditional release of detained Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, welcoming her recent meeting with the International Committee and the Red Cross.
- On Monday, Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Red Cross's head of delegation in Myanmar, in Naypyidaw, marking her first publicised contact with a foreign official since the army deposed her government in February 2021.
- Photographs from the meeting showed the 81-year-old cutting a cake bearing the words "Happy Birthday Aunty Suu." Her son, Kim Aris, called the visit "a first step," but expressed concern over her solitary confinement for more than five years.
- Independent analyst David Mathieson told AFP that the military is using Suu Kyi as "the old military game plan to use Suu Kyi as a bargaining chip," as Min Aung Hlaing seeks to mend diplomatic ties following the coup.
- ASEAN's chair urged the military to grant the bloc's special envoy access to all parties in Myanmar under the Five-Point Consensus, as the conflict since the coup has killed more than 100,000 people.
