The Olympic flame for the Milan-Cortina Winter Games was lit by Italian alpine skiing stars at the opening ceremony on Friday. In Milan, Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni were honored, while in Cortina, Sofia Goggia lit the flame. At the San Siro stadium, opera legend Andrea Bocelli greeted the arrival of the Olympic flame with "Nessun dorma."
Italian President Sergio Mattarella declared the 25th Winter Olympic Games open in Milan. Before that, a ceremony with 1,300 performers took place at several locations in northern Italy, which included scenes from Italy's rich history. Around 2,900 athletes, including 37 from Slovenia, will compete for medals until February 22.
