UPI Completes 10 Years, Clocks Nearly 13,000-Fold Rise in Transaction Volume
- On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, The Unified Payments Interface completed 10 years of operation, transforming India's digital payments landscape into a global benchmark for real-time transactions.
- Annual transaction volume rose from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in FY2026, marking an almost 13,000-fold increase as the system became central to India's ecosystem.
- Developed by the National Payments Corporation under Reserve Bank oversight, the system processes more than 66 crore transactions daily and includes participation from 703 banks.
- The International Monetary Fund identified the system as the world's largest real-time payment network, accounting for nearly 49 per cent of global real-time transaction volumes as of 2025.
- Expanding beyond domestic borders, the service is now operational in 11 countries, including France, Singapore, and the UAE, positioning it for further innovation and financial inclusion.
